Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

Vachchikkavaa is a energetic romantic folk-pop duet from the 2008 film Silambattam. In the song, the lead lovers playfully flirt and declare their deep affection for one another. The male protagonist promises to fulfill his beloved's every wish, praising her charm and beauty using traditional folk imagery like pure gold and flower buds, while the female protagonist admires his heroic courage in fighting off troublemakers and surrenders her heart to him. The lyrics combine playful banter with passionate expression, celebrating youthful romance, mutual admiration, and joyful companionship. The song builds on a rhythmically vibrant folk narrative where both lovers playfully tease each other about desire and closeness.

Trivia

This song is a modernized remix of the classic track 'Vachikkava Unna Mattum' composed by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja for the 1979 movie 'Nallathoru Kudumbam' (starring Sivaji Ganesan). The recreated version for 'Silambattam' (2008) was adapted by Ilaiyaraaja's son, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and rendered by the lead actor Silambarasan himself alongside singer Suchitra, becoming one of the biggest chartbusters of that year.
