Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
This devotional hymn from the movie 'Thiru Neelakandar' (1972) is a deeply moving plea addressed to Lord Shiva (Nadaraja) and the Divine Mother Parvati. The devotee addresses Shiva as both mother and father, praising Him as an immense ocean of compassion. The devotee prays for the removal of all illness and suffering, begging the Lord to perform His cosmic dance inside the soul once all troubles are cured. Additionally, the lyrics express a devout wish for offspring who speak sweet Tamil, requesting maternal grace and asking for the inner heart to open wide so the divine presence of Nadaraja may dwell and dance within.

Poetic devices
Uvamaani / Metaphor
“Thaayae thanthaiyae thadang karunai perunithiyae”
Addressing the divine as 'Thaayae thanthaiyae' (mother and father) and 'perunithiyae' (great treasure) elevates the Lord to the source of all existence and grace.
Iyaibu / End Rhyme (Epiphora)
“Pillai tamil pesi ezhavendum / Unthan penmai manamirangi tharavendum”
The repetitive ending suffix 'vendum' (must/should) across consecutive lines accentuates the supplicant's earnest longing and prayerful rhythm.
Ethukai / Second Letter Rhyme
“Ullam vazhi thiranthu vida vendum”
The second letter alignment 'l' in 'Pillai' and 'n' in 'Unthan' or 'll' in 'Ullam' creates harmonious phonetic structure typical in Tamil verse.
