Shankara, Shiva Shankara!
Hail, hail Chandrashekhara (the moon-crested Lord)!
With this holy sage's hair,
and both hands placed at your sacred feet,
letting them burn as wicks,
pouring my blood as lamp oil,
this is the living lamp of my body I offer, O Lord!
Come, come and light the lamp of wisdom!
Shankara, Shiva Shankara!
Hail, hail Chandrashekhara!
May my penance forever be Shiva...
Aa... aa... aa... aa... aa...
Aa... aa... aa... aa... aa...
May my penance forever be dedicated to Shiva,
and may Shiva be the only penance of my life!
Bringing all five senses under my control,
I humbly practiced deep meditation.
At the holy feet of the blue-throated Lord who conquered time,
this meditating sage offers worship morning and evening.
Performing sacred fire rituals again and again as ordained,
grant me the boon I seek forever!
O Lord who dwells in the five realms,
come, come to light the five-faced lamp!
Shankara, Shiva Shankara!
Hail, hail Chandrashekhara!
With this holy sage's hair,
and both hands placed at your sacred feet,
letting them burn as wicks,
pouring my blood as lamp oil,
this is the living lamp of my body I offer, O Lord!
Come, come and light the lamp of wisdom!
Shankara, Shiva Shankara!
Hail, hail Chandrashekhara!
Doing severe penance for the bright holy flame to rise,
this body that suffers in austerity,
as it slowly scorches, let the fire spark upon the sacred lamp!
Let the light of supreme truth shine here!
As this wise sage's body perishes,
as my blood flows like a river,
and my mind melts into Shiva,
O Lord who holds fire in your palm, come!
Kindle the flame upon these five wicks!
O Great One who wears the crescent moon, come!
Light the lamp to take away all my flaws and grief!
I surrender at your dancing holy feet!
I surrender to you, Lord of the cosmic hall!
I surrender to you, Lord of Goddess Uma!
I surrender to you, foremost Lord of the universe!
As my body burns like a wick,
O Lord, give your graceful command!
As I perform this supreme penance here,
O Shiva, shower your boundless mercy!
Hara Hara Shiva Shiva, Shiva Shiva Hara Hara!
He is the Lord praised by the sacred Vedas,
Lord Shiva, so sweet to his devotees!
Coming instantly the moment he is called,
Lord Hara, who gives refuge to all!
I have no other refuge in this world,
and no destiny without you, O Lord!
Let your compassion awaken for me,
grant me the sight of your divine form, my Master... my Lord!
O Shiva... O Hara... O Shiva... O Hara!
