Away from all the heat of Tamil Nadu,
Up in the cool hill town of Ooty,
In the lovely, wonderful
Anna Arts College,
At this event taking place right now,
On the paper slip that was drawn,
Our groom's name is...
Chorus: Hit it!
Male: This girl's name is...
Chorus: Radha!
Male: The two of them are going to
Belt out their songs, folks!
Chorus: Start it up!
The horoscope matches,
They look great together as a pair,
Male: But our hearts don't match,
I don't like her at all!
Hey, the horoscope matches,
They look great together as a pair,
Male: But our hearts don't match,
I don't like her at all!
How can I ever
Marry this girl?
Instead of that, I would rather
Graze donkeys or horses!
Ugh, get lost!
The horoscope matches,
They look great together as a pair,
But our hearts don't match,
I don't like him at all!
How can I ever
Marry this guy?
Instead of that, I would rather jump
Into a river or a pond!
Hey girl, don't say that,
Don't go down the wrong path,
He's a good boy, marry him,
Fall in love and stay close to him!
With guards, servants, and an entourage,
My father built a huge mansion,
A beautiful Maruti car,
And a hundred other luxuries too!
To buy me even one of those,
He doesn't have the capacity!
Like this bridegroom,
There is no bigger fool!
To tie the thali (sacred wedding thread) around my neck,
Possessing all the eight good qualities,
This local groom has none of them, none at all!
Oh, this marriage is just a nuisance to me!
Hey girl, don't say that,
Don't go down the wrong path,
He's a good boy, marry him,
Female: Ha ha ha!
Chorus: Fall in love and stay close to him!
How can I ever
Marry this girl?
Instead of that, I would rather
Graze donkeys or horses!
The horoscope matches,
They look great together as a pair,
Male: But my heart doesn't match,
Female: I don't like him at all!
Drop all that arrogance and pride, girl,
My temper is burning hot right now,
You are just spinning useless lies,
Girl, if you push it too far, you might lose your...
Chorus: ...life!
Can gold ever give a woman everything?
Can anything happen without a real man?
The joy that all your gold and wealth can never bring,
I will step right up and give it to you!
I'm coming to tie the thali (sacred wedding thread) with three knots!
Here I come!
The horoscope matches,
They look great together as a pair,
What does matching hearts matter, girl?
I am going to tie the wedding knot, just you watch!

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This humorous duet set in a college event in Ooty features two students paired up for a song performance. Though astrologically compatible (raasi porutham), both lightheartedly express their absolute unwillingness to marry each other due to a lack of emotional compatibility (manasu porutham). The heroine ridicules the hero's lack of wealth and good qualities, claiming she would rather drown than marry him. In response, the hero sarcastically retorts that he would rather graze animals than marry her, ultimately leading to a playful battle of sexes filled with lively chorus support and comedic retorts.

Poetic devices

Edhugai (Second letter rhyming)

Adi appadi nee solladhae / Thappu vazhi pogathae

The lines end with rhyming sounds 'porutham undu'.

Hyperbole (Uvarvu Navortchi)
