Malaikkallan (1954) was a historic hit starring M. G. Ramachandran and P. Bhanumathi, and became the first Tamil film to win the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film. Bhanumathi Ramakrishna, a multi-talented artist, sang this track herself. The movie's huge success led to it being remade in six different Indian languages, including the famous Hindi remake 'Azaad' starring Dilip Kumar.
