Aariro... aariro...
Aariro... aararo... aariraaro...
Open your eyes, my lord,
Take hold of my hand, my lord.
Open your eyes, my lord,
Take hold of my hand, my lord.
This land is looking up at the sky,
Come embrace me and bring a rich harvest.
Open your eyes, my lord,
Take hold of my hand, my lord.
Open your eyes, my lord,
Take hold of my hand, my lord.
My youth is wilting, and the cold wind is rising,
If I join with my lord, all my troubles will vanish.
My youth is wilting, and the cold wind is rising,
If I join with my lord, all my troubles will vanish.
Do not hesitate, do not delay,
My body is longing, won't you come?
O sacred ocean of grace,
My body is burning with desire,
Won't you grant me bliss to quench my longing?
Don't, girl, don't torment an innocent man!
Female: Ha!
Male: Don't invite my curse upon yourself!
Hey, don't, girl, don't torment an innocent man!
Female: Haan!
Male: Don't invite my curse upon yourself!
My penance will never break, girl,
The flag on my mast will never come down!
Hey, don't, girl, don't torment an innocent man!
Female: Haan haan ah
Male: Don't invite my curse upon yourself!
Hey!
I am making the bed, O wild ascetic, come running!
Come wear all my kisses as a garland!
I am making the bed, O wild ascetic, come running!
Come wear all my kisses as a garland!
Male: Hey, my devotion won't waver, my prayers won't stop,
Do not touch my body, my peacock!
Once my mind is made up, it is final,
Hey ey ey ey,
Understand my steadfast nature,
I will never stray from my path, girl!
Open your eyes, my lord...
Male: Aiyyo!
Female: Take hold of my hand, my lord.
Girl, don't torment an innocent man!
Female: Ha!
Don't invite my curse upon yourself!
This land is looking up at the sky,
Come embrace me and bring a rich harvest.
Female: Open your eyes, my lord... Male: Aiyyo!
Female: Take hold of my hand, my lord.
Male: Oh no!
Female: Open your eyes, my lord...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This humorous duet from the 1983 film Mundhanai Mudichu portrays a clever, playful battle of wits between a young wife attempting to seduce her husband and the husband stubbornly maintaining a facade of stoic, ascetic celibacy. The song opens with traditional lullaby chants before shifting into seductive pleas where the wife compares herself to drought-stricken farmland awaiting rain, urging her husband to abandon hesitation and fulfill their marital romance. In response, the husband comedicly warns her about breaking a devout man's penance (thavam) and threatening her with a pious man's curse. Combining sacred devotional terminology with playful sensual metaphors, the song showcases Gangai Amaran's witty lyrical style, set to Ilaiyaraaja's vibrant folk arrangement.
