{ Seeing me
Do you not remember?
Is the drama of youth a burden? }
Were the days we lived together so few?
Did this heart really forget?
Seeing me
Do you not remember?
Is the drama of youth a burden?
{ On the bank of that blue
river,
you were standing
at dusk }
I
came singing
a melody; we
grew close to each other
for a brief time.
Seeing me
Do you not remember?
Is the drama of youth a burden?
Were the days we lived together so few?
Did this heart really forget?
Ask this night,
it will tell.
Ask that moon,
it will tell.
Ask your
own heart, it will
tell that we have been
born again.
Seeing me
Do you not remember?
Is the drama of youth a burden?
That day,
as soon as you left,
you forgot our bond.
Today there has arrived
a new bird.
In whichever
lifetime it may be, at least
once we shall
meet under this moon.
Seeing me
Do you not remember?

Were the days we lived together so few?
Did this heart really forget?

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
Paartha Nyabagam Illaiyo is a classic song from the 1964 psychological thriller Puthiya Paravai. In the film, the song is performed by B. Saroja Devi's character to provoke and intrigue the protagonist (played by Sivaji Ganesan). The lyricist Kannadasan weaves themes of memory, lost love, reincarnation, and identity as the singer hauntingly asks her beloved if he recalls their past encounters by the riverbank and their deep emotional connection, or if he has erased those memories entirely.
