Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This poignant track from Cheran's 'Pokkisham' captures deep heartbreak, existential grief, and tragic separation. Through a series of powerful metaphors, the protagonist questions the purpose of living when the essence of life and love is stripped away. Life without love is compared to flowers blooming without fragrance, fish swimming in a dried stream, or a roof remaining after the sky has collapsed.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Simile (Upamai)

Oru kannadi pol / Naan udaindhal enna…

Compares the fragile mental state of the protagonist to a glass mirror shattering.

Rhetorical Question (Vinah)

Odaiyae kaaindha pin / Meengalae neechal yen…

Uses logical paradoxes as rhetorical questions to emphasize the absolute futility of existence after heartbreak.

Ethukai (Second-letter Rhyme)

Mozhi illamalae ... Vizhi illamalae

Rhyming of the second letter ('zhi') across consecutive opening lines ('Mozhi' and 'Vizhi').
