In the fire of desire,
my mind burns and melts away.
Across the wide sky, that image
keeps appearing and slipping away.
This haunting illusion of passion,
I must strike down and destroy.
If I cannot, let my very breath
come to a complete stop.
Across my entire body, desire rises
and kindles a sacrificial fire again and again.
O Mother Goddess, you must come here yourself
and pour water to put out the flames!
Your presence holds complete sway over my mind;
the beauty of youth torments my very life.
The ache of longing tests the night;
dreams linger until the break of dawn.
A fierce storm of desire has swept through,
shaking me down to my deepest roots.
Protect me, Goddess, protect me, O Goddess!
Eeee... ee... ee...

Beyond the translation

Overall song meaning

This intense composition expresses the agony of uncontrollable sensual passion and emotional turmoil. The protagonist likens lust and desire to an burning fire and an illusory demon consuming his heart and mind. Unable to withstand the torment of separation and bodily yearning, he surrenders to the Divine Mother, begging for her intervention to extinguish the flames of desire before it takes his life.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Metaphor (Uruvagaim)

Mogam ennum theeyil

Desire/lust is metaphorically portrayed as a burning fire (Mogam ennum theeyil) and a tempest (Aasai ennum puyal).

Repetition/Anaphora (Adukku Thodar)

En manam vendhu vendhu urugum

The word 'vendhu' (burning) is repeated sequentially to emphasize intense suffering.

Rhyme (Edhukai)

Manadhil unadhu aadhikkam
