Beyond the translation

Song interpretation

This celebratory comedic song from 'Manal Kayiru' (1982) marks a turning point in the marital conflict between the protagonist Kittumani and his wife Uma. After Kittumani laid down strict, absurd conditions for marriage and subsequently sought a divorce due to misunderstandings stirred by his uncle, the sudden news of his wife's pregnancy upends all legal plans and ego trips. The characters tease Kittumani for his failed plans to separate and celebrate the arrival of the 'prince' (their child) who unites the estranged couple. With witty wordplay and references to mythological precedents like Shakuntala and Dushyanta, the song humorously admonishes the husband to abandon his stubborn rules, fall at his wife's feet, and embrace domestic responsibilities like washing clothes and singing lullabies, emphasizing that familial bonds and love ultimately triumph over petty disputes.

Writing craft

Poetic devices

Edhugai (Second-letter Rhyming)

Natta vidha mulaichadhu / Patta paadu palichadhu

Matching second consonants across lines: 'Natta vidha' and 'Patta paadu' (tt), 'Kattil' and 'Thottil' (tt), 'Raja' and 'Rani' (j/n pairing), 'Pogaadhaiya' and 'Vidaadhaiya' (da).

Metaphor & Simile (Uvamai / Uvameyam)

Attaiyai pol otti kondathu

'Attaiyai pol otti kondathu' (stuck like a leech) and 'Pallu pona paambhu' (a snake without fangs) compare the husband's defeated ego and the unbreakable bond of marriage to vivid physical imagery.

Mythological Allusion (Sarithira/Purana Kurippu)

Thusyanthanin sakunthalai / Thangachiyum andha katchi thaan

Refers to the classic tale of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta from Hindu mythology to illustrate how the birth of a child reunites a separated royal couple.
