Aarariraaro (a soothing lullaby refrain)
As I sing here
O Mother, close your eyes and sleep
Leaning on my lap
Throughout all the time we live
A mother's feet are heaven itself
That is what all four Vedas proclaim
And that is what I come to know
The sacred mantra named 'Mother'
Rules over the entire universe
Aarariraaro
As I sing here
O Mother, close your eyes and sleep
Leaning on my lap
You planted me on this earth like a rootless tree
If an evil eye fell on me, your soul writhed in pain
You taught me all the relationships of this world
You guided my path between birth and death
I want to build a cradle for you and become a mother myself...
Aarariraaro
As I sing here
O Mother, close your eyes and sleep
Leaning on my lap
Are not all the words a mother speaks the medicine that cures illness?
Are you not the sleepless soul who renounced all desire for land and gold?
In the ledger of time, you are both the expense and the income
Upon this spinning earth, you are the unshakeable ground
O God, give the command... let my mother be born as my daughter...

Beyond the translation
Song interpretation
Aarariraaro from the movie Raam is a deeply emotional ode to maternal love, sung from the perspective of a devoted son comforting his mother. Reversing the traditional role where a mother sings a lullaby to her child, the son lulls his mother to sleep on his lap. He expresses immense gratitude for her selfless sacrifices, noting how she guided him through life, protected him, and taught him human connections without desiring any material wealth. The lyrics elevate the mother to a divine stature, comparing her name to a cosmic mantra and her presence to stable ground in a moving world. In a heartwarming climax, the son prays to God to allow his mother to be reborn as his own daughter so he can give back the care she bestowed upon him.

Poetic devices
Role Reversal / Situational Irony
“Thaayae nee kann uranghu Ennoda madi saaindhu”
The child sings a traditional lullaby (Aarariraaro) to comfort his mother, reversing typical maternal roles.
Metaphor
“Thaayin paadham swargamae”
Equating the mother's feet directly with heaven ('swargam') to emphasize ultimate devotion.
Simile (Upama)
“Ver illadha maram pol ennai nee bhoomiyil nattayae”
Compares the speaker to a rootless tree planted on earth by the mother's boundless affection.
Paradox / Antithesis
“Suzhalgindra bhoomiyin melae suzhalaadha bhoomiyum nee”
Juxtaposes the spinning motion of the earth with the unmoving stability of maternal love.
